However, because of the contribution of microbial and body protein to the protein in feces, DP is more misleading than CP. One can estimate DP from the CP content of the diet fed to cattle or sheep by the following equation: %DP = (%CP) – 3, where %DP and %CP are. Michael Kogut and Dr. Christos Gougoulias. feed are based on the percentages of total protein, fat, fiber, and nitrogen-free extract (carbohydrate except fiber) and the coefiicients of digestibility, which have been determined experimentally.

Thus it can be seen that tables of composition are useful in a variety of ways. The data assembled in table 1 cover the more common constituents. Short names are used for Feed Composition Tables, compiled for use in particular countries or regions, when it is inconvenient to use the longer and more precise International Feed Description; however, the Short dame cannot be used for describing a feed when adding material to the feed.

But, back to the original question, and here’s my own answer: my preferred tables of feed composition values are those of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) titled Tables of Composition and Nutritional Value of Feed Materials. These were published in (second edition), but since then I believe there is now an internet-based database that includes even more.Protein: Crude protein (CP) values are shown for each feed, which are Kjeldahl nitrogen times /16 orsince proteins contain 16% nitrogen on average.

CP doesn't give any information on the actual protein and non-protein nitrogen (NPN) content of a feed. Digestible protein (DP) has been included in many composition tables.
